- APPENDIX G - THE PROPER IMAGE THROUGH DRESS
-
- The job interview is the time to start using clothing as a
- business tool. For upper level positions, which usually
- require a series of interviews, you should have several
- appropriate ensembles. Every item of clothing and
- accessories must be conservative, conventional, elegant and
- coordinated.
-
- No matter what kind of clothing you have, it won't look good
- if you travel in it and then go directly to the interview.
- Always fly in the night before and do not wear your best
- outfit; have it pressed at the hotel before the interview.
-
- It's difficult to gage exactly who you will be interviewing
- with and to predict their preference in dress. Wear a
- conservative outfit for the first interview and always look
- around at what the executives in the prospective company are
- wearing, as it may influence how you dress for subsequent
- interviews.
-
- When you look right you usually feel right, should not be
- unduly tense, and are giving yourself a break which helps
- keep you in control. Before the interview, look in a full
- length mirror and try and be as objective as the interviewer
- will be.
-
- For Men
-
- The suits you wear should be very conservative. Choose
- either solid dark blue, solid gray, pin-stripe in either
- dark blue or gray, and a plaid only if you are certain that
- those you will meet with are less conservative.
-
- Your shirts must be either white or pale blue and you should
- have a good selection of ties. Expensive small-patterned
- ties will say that you are from an upper-middle-class
- background. Brightly colored large patterned ties are more
- appropriate for the entertainment industry.
-
- For Women
-
- A common sense wardrobe that compliments your personality is
- the best choice. Stay away from high fashion but it does
- pay, for high level positions, to dress as expensively as
- you can afford. Appearance means success and it is not who
- you know but the visual impression you make.
-
- Are your clothes appropriate for a business appointment, do
- they project a successful image, and would they be
- considered serious clothing? A well-fitted, tailored suit,
- dress or coordinated skirt and blouse can make you look and
- feel more confident. Jewelry is considered acceptable, but
- don't overdo it.
-
- All Candidates
-
- Be on guard for those "informal meetings" with the president
- who just "wants to say hello." Wear your best outfit and
- conduct yourself in the most formal manner.
-
- REMEMBER, THE CLOTHING YOU WEAR AND THE PERSONALITY YOU
- DISPLAY IN THE FIRST FEW MINUTES WILL HAVE TREMENDOUS IMPACT
- ON THE DECISION TO HIRE YOU.
-
- DRESS FOR THE JOB YOU WANT, NOT THE JOB YOU HAVE.
